DAVE GOLDMAN
My current work with mixed natural media began in 1994 when I produced
my first baskets and buckskins. Although my education and much
of my career has been in biology and ecology, I see crafting items
from natural materials as a logical extension of my life as a naturalist.
Harvesting and processing natural materials fosters my relationship
with the natural world.
This work stems from the suite of primitive technologies like hide
tanning and basketry that are common heritage for all people. It
allows me a unique aspect of participation in the continuum of
human experience.
I generally gather or grow my materials myself and undertake all processing and production myself. I harvest materials both locally and during my travels to various forests, swamps, and deserts. I may combine several materials that come from different ecosystems.
My tools are only the most basic hand tools: some are antiques, and some were owned by my grandfather. For example, I harvest and prepare bark only with a pocketknife, and tan deerskins with traditional natural methods.
I attempt to produce all elements of a piece, including actually
making my own cordage. Starting with time honored designs, I occasionally
add embellishments that accentuate the personality of the materials.
