Watercolor: JULIE SINGDAHLSEN

"Several years ago, while attending classes under Michael J. Simpson at Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, he commented, Perhaps your work is not so much about emotions as it is about concepts. You like the painting process, the paint, the paper... As I've continued working, I do find the process intriguing, full of possibilities, wonder and perhaps most important, fun. Printmaking, sculpture, opaque and transparent painting, drawing, and many other media were used in my classes during my teaching years, so I guess it's natural for me to incorporate them in my own work."

"I admire Elizabeth Murrays handling of the sculptural surfaces and her wonderful patterns. In the same vein, I have always found Robert Rauschenburgs use of materials, processes, and cultural absorption fresh and inspiring. In a computer age, my grandmothers quilts and my mother's needlework seem as vibrant and fresh as the pixels on a monitor. The computer possibilities of repetitions on a grid system, plus the ability to cut and paste are infinite . . .and fun! The fractured images and bombardment of light and form that television presents are yet another challenging influence on my work. As long as I can keep the wonder in my thinking, I'll continue painting and tinkering with works on paper."
