BASKETS

"For over 800 generations baskets have enriched and defined the status of human life. From cave man to tech man, owning a basket has provided art and utility to its owners. It is because of this fascination with baskets that I decided over 5 years ago to devote myself to the craft of basket weaving. I have always been interested in arts and crafts and attended Central State University for 2 years pursuing a degree in studio arts."

“I am basically self taught but have studied the works of many famous and talented basket makers as well as visiting them in their studios. My baskets are usually creations of my own imagination and design. I see a basket in my mind, occasionally sketch it and then weave it from my own hand-dyed reed. The result is a one-of-a-kind basket as no two are ever alike.”

Martha Towler is a retired business woman whose career consisted of sales, interior design and business ownership. During those years she was on the board of directors and often chairman of many civic and community organizations. Her international travels have given her a broad prospective of creative work from many countries.

Martha has demonstrated her work at the North Carolina Arboretum and teaches advanced basket making for Creekside at Brevard College as well as in her studio in Sapphire, NC. She is a member of the Transylvania County Handcrafters Guild. Her works are in numerous private homes and corporate offices throughout the U.S.
