Photography: TOM ATKINS

"I try not to be too philosophical about my photography. Simply stated, I look for the unique qualities of form, intrinsic beauty and visual interest in my subject matter and attempt to combine the artist's inner vision and craftsmanship to produce a photograph of the subject that commands interest and attention."

After obtaining a BFA degree from Ohio University, Athens, in 1956, Tom Atkins entered the U.S. Navy, spending the next 20 years involved in all aspects of motion picture and television production. Duty stations included the Naval Photographic Center, Washington, D.C., the Hollywood Motion Picture Office, the Pacific Fleet Combat Camera Group, the Pentagon and the White House. The highlight of his Navy career was a 6 year tour of duty at the White House as the First Family's personal cinematographer. It was during this period that he filmed President Kennedy's fateful trip to Dallas. His 16mm color film of that event has been used in every major motion picture and TV production depicting that unfortunate event. After Dallas, he continued filming the activities of the Johnson administration until 1968.After retiring from the Navy in 1976 as CDR USN, he spent the next 20 years as a photography instructor at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale teaching photographic composition and black and white and color darkroom techniques.

Since photography is a constantly changing and evolving art form, he is currently delving into the use of the computer and the myriad of opportunities it offers the photographer. Examples of his work may also be found on display at the Interiors Marketplace in Biltmore Village.
